Lamont Doherty is the premier oceanographic institute in the United States along with Scripps in La Joya California and Woods Hole in Falmouth Massachusetts. Its sizable campus is located on the banks of the Hudson River just north of Manhattan. It is a member of Columbia University and at the same time Columbia has created a hybrid entity, “the Earth Institute” combining curriculum, faculty and resources between the University and Lamont Doherty.  They are on the forefront of technical research regarding climate change as well as practical engineering aspects and social aspects. They are very open to community involvement and weekly publish their upcoming events, many of which are open to outsiders. One of the most intriguing projects they are working on is mapping flood diagrams of the New York City area and evaluating potential projects to limit the impact of climate change and a rise in sea level.
