Career at Praxair

James Sawyer is an accomplished executive with decades of experience in the Natural Resources industry.  

Throughout his nearly 30-year career with Praxair (now Linde), Sawyer received numerous awards for his work as the company’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

In 1985, James Sawyer joined the Union Carbide (now Praxair) team. Sawyer established himself as a capable leader and renowned business acumen.  His dedication to the company and its customers remained prevalent throughout his career at Praxair.

Sawyer was involved in the re-organization of nine business units that lead to three separate businesses and the end to a conglomerate. 

A people person, he took a genuine interest in his customers and approached the sensitive situation with careful consideration.  Sawyer’s success in this mission resulted in his promotion to CFO. Through this role, his greatest success was redefining the strategy of the business and setting stringent capital allocation methodology.

Named Best CFO for 10 Consecutive Years

For an entire decade, Sawyer maintained the title of “Best CFO in Chemical Industry,” as surveyed by Institutional Investor.

Shortly after his promotion to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in 2000, James Sawyer was honored time and time again by readers participating in Institutional Investor’s annual survey.  The powerhouse CFO maintained this designation for ten consecutive years.  

Annually, Institutional Investor, a leading international business to business publication, hosts a poll amongst their audience.  This poll results in the recognition of the best CFOs in the United States. Various CFOs across numerous industries are recognized each year.  James Sawyer is proud to have received such recognition for an entire decade.
